Our Story

Shea and Jess met in June of 2019 at USC when Shea began his first year of surgical residency, and Jess was starting her second year of surgical residency. Each feeling that the other was easy to talk to and fun to be around, they became fast friends while working long hours in the Surgical ICU together.

In 2020, when the world shut down with the pandemic, Shea and Jess started spending more time together, supporting each other through that difficult time. In a time of uncertainty and isolation, Shea and Jess felt clarity and “at home” when they were together.

Shea asked Jess out on their first official date on the rooftop bar of the Ace Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles, and they spent the next few months getting to know each other better. They quickly bonded over their shared love of sushi, football, wine, and IPAs. Shea introduced Jess to his love of Pixar movies and astrophysics, while Jess converted Shea to a University of Texas fan (Hook ‘Em!) and introduced him to the Food Network.

It was soon clear to them both that they enjoyed spending time together, whether in the hospital, at a brewery playing Connect Four, learning to cook together, or just quiet nights at home.

During this time Shea and Jess kept their budding relationship to themselves, but on July 1, 2020, on the balcony of her apartment in Los Angeles, Shea asked Jess if they could make their relationship official and let the secret out. A relieved Shea and an excited Jess became an official couple! Their first call was to their friend Brandon (who had his suspicions and fittingly will be officiating their wedding).

On February 18, 2023, Shea took Jess to Paso Robles, California, where he had made many happy memories growing up…and where he was hoping to make one of his happiest with Jess. He took her hand, guided her to the top of his family’s property, got down on one knee under an oak tree, presented her with a ring, and asked for her hand, forever and always.
